SUBURBS
As with all cities, Johannesburg has some more expensive and desirable places to live and some
which are not as expensive and less fashionable. Determining factors include;
the attractiveness of the houses and gardens, peacefulness of the suburb, proximity to schools
and easy access to amenities and businesss centres. The level of criminal activity and the relative
safety and security of an area are also important.
The map below demarcates an area - enclosed by a purple line - within which fall the suburbs which are more pleasant, convenient and safe to live in. Most of this area has quick and easy access to amenities and is within reasonable reach of the city's business centres. The streets are generally well maintained and municipal services function most of the time. Safety and security varies as crime tends to move from area to area but, these areas are relatively safe.
Please note that this map is a guide only. If you are considering living in a particular area you should speak to people already living there. Most suburbs have a Residents'' or community association and these can be a good place to find out about an area before you make a final decision.

This map is relevant if you are working in Johannesburg, Randburg or Sandton. If you are working further away, then you might consider living a little outside Johannesburg. Midrand in the north, Germiston and Boksburg to the east of Johannebsburg and Roodepoort and Krugersdorp in the west, all have some very nice suburbs and the pace tends to be a little more relaxed too.
